New Delhi: After the controversial visit of US Vice-President JD Vance and his wife Usha to Greenland recently, and amid President Donald Trump’s threats to annex it, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen travelled to the Arctic island territory on a three-day trip, beginning on Wednesday, aimed at building trust among the local people.
This is a planned visit, as it was announced after US Vice President JD Vance visited a US airbase in Greenland and accused Denmark of underinvesting in the territory, the media reported on Wednesday.
Mineral-rich and strategically-located Greenland, an autonomous island territory of Denmark, has suddenly emerged as one of the world’s new flashpoints. It is becoming more accessible due to climate change. Trump said Greenland is quite essential for US security.
After a March election produced a new government, Frederiksen is due to meet the potential Greenlandic Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the future Naalakkersuisut, the Cabinet.
She thanked the politicians of Greenland who are handling the situation under great pressure.
The political party most sympathetic to the US President, which advocates for a swift path towards independence from Denmark, was excluded from coalition talks to form the next government.
The intent of Trump’s administration to acquire the Greenland territory can cause more problems for the administration as milder parties move closer to Denmark, said Peter Viggo Jakobsen , Associate Professor at the Danish Defence Academy.
