Football: Ivory Coast defeats Nigeria, retains AFCON championship for a third time
New Delhi, Nov 12: The Ivory Coast national team lifted the AFCON trophy for a third time after defeating Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-1 on Sunday.
The Ivory Coast team scored two goals in the second half of the game. Frank Kessie scored the first goal in the 62nd minute, while Sebastian Haller scored the second goal in the 81st minute of the game.
Nigeria’s national team captain Troost-Ekong scored a goal in the 38th minute of the game but failed to go further as Ivory Coast defeated it by two goals against 1.
Last night, Ivory Coast became the AFCON champions for the third time. It had lifted this trophy for the first time in 1992 and then in 2015.
Currently, Ivory Coast is one of the most successful teams in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) history.
