New Delhi, May 31: A Spain court has started an official investigation into football legend Gerard Pique, 37, for his alleged involvement in relocating the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia, the media reported on Friday.
According to the Spanish court, Pique’s company “Kosmos” signed agreements with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) envisaging he would receive 40 million euros and RFEF 400 million euros. Pique’s role was brokering the deal.
“The facts under investigation in the present proceedings originate from possible illegalities with criminal implications in contracting or agreements,” Judge Delia Rodrigo said.
The case has been under investigation since 2022 when audio recordings of Pique and former RFEF president Luis Rubiales were leaked, but the legend wasn’t under investigation until now.
The court has revealed the agreement was signed in 2019 and 2020 between former RFEF President Luis Rubiales, the Sela sports company of the Saudi Arabia government, and the Kosmos company of Gerard Pique.
Pique has not commented on being under investigation yet.
