New Delhi, March 22: A football jersey can be iconic, special, and expensive because of the story behind it. The five most expensive football jerseys in football history, that enriched those who wore them, are:
(1) Diego Maradona’s jersey: Sold for a staggering 7.1 million euros, the Argentine legend wore it during the World Cup quarter-final match against the England national team in 1986 in Mexico. In the middle of the match, Maradona scored the goal with his left hand, which is not allowed in football, but it became known as the Hand of God!
(2) Lionel Messi’s jersey: The auction of a collection of his six jerseys has enriched this Argentine icon with 6.1 million euros. Messi wore these jerseys in his historic World Cup campaign in 2022 in Qatar. The Qatar World Cup became important to Messi’s career.
(3) Pele’s jersey: Pele’s 1970 World Cup jersey was sold for 157,750 euros in 2002. The Brazilian legend wore it at the World Cup final game against Italy when he scored the first goal in the match. He won the World Cup on 4-1 goals.
(4) Sir Geoff Hurst: His World Cup final jersey was sold for 91,750 euros in 2000, becoming the most expensive jersey in football history at the time. He wore it when he scored a hat-trick against West Germany and helped his nation England to win their first and last World Cup.
(5) Cristiano Ronaldo’s jersey: Portuguese superstar Ronaldo’s final Manchester United shirt sold for 39,000 euros. He wore it playing against Aston Villa FC bought by a Chinese bidder in 2022.
Other footballers who sold their jerseys to make good money are Paul Gascoigne (28,680 euros), George Best (24,000 euros), and Eric Cantona (15,350 euros).
