New Delhi, April 10: Former England footballer Danny Murphy, 47, has admitted to his being addicted to cocaine and weed after ending his sports career in 2013.

In an interview with Ben Heath’s podcast on Thursday last week, he said his post-retirement problems pushed him to use drugs, especially cocaine and weed.

“I had a spell on cocaine and smoking some weed, the drink I could live without. I wasn’t an alcoholic. I could sit in a house with alcohol and not drink it.

“For a while, I was (addicted to cocaine), yeah, I got to the point where I thought I couldn’t do things without it, which was nonsense. Of course, I could.” Murphy said.

However, he said supporters and therapy helped him to overcome the drug addiction.

In his football career, Murphy played for Crewe Alexandra, Liverpool FC, Charlton Athletic, Tottenham Hotspurs FC, Fulham FC, and Blackburn Rovers FC.

He also earned nine England caps in his 20 years of professional football career.
