Durga Puja festivities begin across Odisha with Maha Shashthi celebrations

Bhubaneswar  [Odisha]: Durga Puja festivities are filling Odisha with devotion and festive fervour, with Maha Shashthi being observed today. Coinciding with Navaratri, the festival celebrates the divine feminine power and the triumph of good over evil. The celebrations will culminate in Vijaya Dashami, scheduled to observe on 21st followed by idol immersion on the 22nd of this month.

Navaratri honours Goddess Durga in her various forms over nine nights, commemorating her victory over the demon Mahishasura. The main Durga Puja rituals began this morning at different puja pandals with Maha Shashthi, when the Goddess is ceremonially welcomed. Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami are marked by special prayers and religious observances, culminating in Vijaya Dashami, which symbolises the victory of righteousness.

All cities and towns in Odisha, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, are witnessing festive celebrations, with elaborately decorated pandals and artistic displays. Cuttack is renowned for its exquisite silver filigree decorations, known as ‘Chandi Medha’, while Puri’s traditional Gosani Jatra adds a distinctive cultural dimension. The festival showcases Odisha’s rich cultural heritage, artistic traditions and spirit of community harmony.
