Disaster: A 4.6 magnitude temblor jolts Uttarakhand
New Delhi: Residents of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand woke up to an earthquake of 4.6 magnitudes on the Richter scale on Saturday morning.
The earthquake, reported during heavy rainfall, could cause trouble to the people by increasing landslides and related incidents, early reports said.
The National Centre of Seismology tweeted: “Earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred on September 11, 2021, at 05:58 AM, IST, on Latitude 30.43 & Longitude 79.26, with a depth of 5km and was located 31km WSW of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, India.”
With Joshimath as the epicenter, tremors were felt in Chamoli, Almora, Paudi, and nearby districts.
Currently, Uttarakhand is equipped with 71 sensors and 165 sirens to issue warnings about earthquakes.
Tremors were also felt in the Kedarnath valley.
Petrified of the strong tremors, the people ran out of their homes in the early hours of Saturday. However, no casualties or loss of property have been reported so far.
