NEW DELHI, Jan 17: More than 36 hours after the incident, no arrest has yet been made in connection with the alleged attack on the Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at the star’s Mumbai residence in the wee hours of Thursday even as the police is claimed to have grabbed another CCTV footage of the suspect.

The timestamp in the second CCTV grab indicated the suspect was making his escape after attacking the actor with a knife. Later, the same suspect was seen in new clothes – a blue shirt – at Bandra railway station, sources said.

Saif Ali Khan, 54, is being treated at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, where he was taken by his son after the attack by an intruder in the early hours on Thursday. He suffered multiple wounds.

“We are observing his progress and he is doing excellently well according to our expectations. As per his progress, we have advised him bed rest and if he is comfortable, then in two to three days we will discharge him,” said Dr Nitin Dange, neurosurgeon at Lilavati Hospital, adding a team of doctors checked on him and made him walk.

Other CCTV footage from the stairs at Saif Ali Khan’s home clearly showed the suspect wearing a red scarf and carrying a backpack. The suspect scurried down the stairs from the sixth floor of ‘Satguru Sharan’ building, where the Khans live, at 2.30 am.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home (Urban) Yogesh Kadam said robbery was the motive behind the attack, adding no underworld gang was involved.

The autorickshaw driver in which profusely bleeding Saif Ali was rushed to the Lilavati hospital said he did not know the identity of the passenger and seeing him bleeding was initially scared that he might get into some trouble with the police.

A woman came running shouting “roko, roko, roko (stop, stop, stop)”, said the auto driver, Bhajan Singh Rana. “I was going via Linkin Road. The building where he (Saif Ali Khan) lives is named Satguru Niwas. A woman came running shouting rickshaw, rickshaw, rickshaw, roko, roko, roko (stop, stop, stop). She then asked to stop the auto near the building gate,” Mr Rana said.

The auto driver did not know that the injured man he was taking to the hospital was Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. “I did not know he was Saif Ali Khan. It was an emergency. Even I was nervous about who is this passenger that is getting into my auto. I was worried that I might get into trouble. And that is why I was nervous,” said Mr Rana.

“He (Saif) was wearing a white shirt stained with blood. A child sat with him, a young man also sat with him,” said the auto driver, narrating the sequence of events. The driver said that upon asking whether he should drive to Holy Family or Lilavati Hospital, the actor said, “Take me to Lilavati.”

Upon reaching the hospital, a guard was called and the hospital staff assembled, said the auto driver, adding that it was then the passenger introduced himself:” I am Saif Ali Khan.” The auto driver realised then that the passenger in his auto was Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan.

Asked if Kareena Kapoor, Saif’s wife, was present at the time the actor was rushed to the hospital, the auto driver said, “I did not notice.” Mr Khan is the son of former Indian cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, and Bollywood actor Sharmila Tagore.
