India, Uzbekistan agree to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation

New Delhi: India and Uzbekistan have agreed to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation through information sharing, capacity building and exchanges of best practices following the 10th meeting of their Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism in New Delhi on Thursday.

The meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, Additional Secretary (Counter Terrorism), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Pirimkulov Gulomjon Shodmonkulovich, Head of the Department for Cooperation with South Asian, Near, Middle Eastern and African Countries under Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two sides discussed threats posed by terrorist groups globally and in their respective regions. They exchanged views on emerging challenges, including extremism and radicalisation, terrorism financing, the use of technology for terrorist purposes and links between transnational organised crime and terrorism.

Both sides agreed to cooperate in addressing threats to national and regional security and further strengthen the Joint Working Group’s framework.

They also explored closer cooperation between their relevant agencies and reaffirmed their commitment to working together in multilateral forums, including the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (SCO-RATS) and the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism (EAG).

The next meeting of the Joint Working Group will be held in Uzbekistan on a mutually convenient date.
