New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with M/s Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for procurement of ‘Advanced Low Altitude Light Weight Radars’ (LLLR-I) at a cost of around Rs 770 crore in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The LLLR(I) system has the capability to detect and monitor targets of the size of fighter aircraft and small/micro drones. It also has the added ability to prioritize air targets. This will help the Indian Army to effectively counter the threat posed by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).
In line with the Government’s vision of a developed India by 2047, this procurement is a significant step towards indigenisation of Air Defence Systems. This will give a boost to India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, which also includes MSMEs. At the same time, it will help in building a strong, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.
