Football: Five countries won many FIFA World Cups so far
New Delhi, Mar 20: The prestigious FIFA World Cup event is an international football tournament where the qualified countries come to compete every four years.
The five countries that have won the World Cup the most times are:
- Brazil: Its national team, nicknamed the Samba Boys, has lifted the World Cup five times in 1958,1962,1970, 1994, and 2002. It is the most successful national team in football history and holds the record of being the only national team to play in every World Cup tournament.
- Germany: It is the second most World Cup-winning country with four World Cups won in 1954,1974,1990 and 2014. Germany missed the Cup only two times.
- Italy: It is also among the most successful countries in the FIFA World Cup history since the World Cup began. Italy lifted the trophy four times in 1934,1938,1982 and 2006. It also appeared on the other two finals in 1970 and 1978.
- Argentina: Its national team has won the World Cup thrice in 1978,1986 and 2022. Argentina has lost in World Cup finals thrice in 1930,1990 and 2014.
- France and Uruguay: They won the World Cup twice each. France won it in 1998 and 2018 while Uruguay won it in 1930 and 1950. Uruguay hosted the first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1930.
Besides these, England (1966) and Spain (2010) have lifted the trophy once each.
The FIFA World Cup tournament started in 1930 with only 13 teams participating in it: seven teams from South America, four from Europe, and two from North America.
