Appointment of Judges to be Made more Transparent: CJI
NEW DELHI, Sept 15: Amidst tussle between the judiciary and the government over the appointment of the members of the judiciary, the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Friday said the process of appointment of judges to the High Courts and Supreme Court would become more transparent by laying down the objective parameters for the process.
The CJI said the centre for planning and research has begun working on a broad platform to assess the top judges of the country who are eligible for the appointments. He added that the assessment would be done on the basis of data available on the judges and judgments delivered by them.
A dossier would be prepared with the objective criteria for appointments to the high courts and the Supreme Court, CJI Chandrachud said, adding that top 50 judges of the country would be assessed for appointment to the top court.
The Supreme Court Collegium has faced criticism for being a “closed-door system” where “judges appoint judges.” The three-decades-old Collegium system has been criticised for not being transparent and accountable enough. The Central government had also been demanding a say in the appointment of the judges.
CJI Chandrachud had previously said no institution was one hundred per cent perfect in democracy. He added that for the collegium system, the solution was to “work our way within the existing system.”
