New Delhi: India and Bangladesh will celebrate December 6, the neighboring country’s National Day, as Maitri Diwas (Friendship Day) following a suggestion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Dhaka visit in March 2021.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, India had, ten days before the Liberation of Bangladesh, recognized the new nation on December 6, 1971, becoming one of its first diplomatic partners.

Apart from Dhaka and New Delhi, the Maitri Diwas will be celebrated in 18 nations around the world: Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Russia, Qatar, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
