New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu, and predicted heavy to very rainfall in Kerala and Pondicherry over the next few days.

“A low-pressure area lies over southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka coast, and the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. It is likely to move westwards during the next 48 hours,” the IMD tweeted.

Therefore, the westward-moving cyclonic circulation from the Bay of Bengal will travel inland and bring heavy showers in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Pondicherry on Friday, and continue for 3 days.

“Thunderstorm and lightning very likely over Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh between October 28 and November 1 and over Rayalaseema from October 29 to November 1, 2021.”

The IMD predicted the rainfall to increase from 11.4 cm to 20.4 cm in certain coastal regions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, and Madurai districts on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has directed senior officials to take preventive measures to minimize losses and prevent floods. “Safety and wellbeing of people are important. Provide relief to the affected on time. Take precautionary steps to prevent flooding,” he said.
