900 earthquakes, just two weeks left. Japan Islanders sleepless :

New Delhi: In just the past two weeks, over 900 earthquakes have shaken the remote island of southern Japan, keeping residents of the local island awake all night.
Seismic activity has been “very active” in the seas around the Tokara Islands since 21 June, authorities said after a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck on Wednesday.
As per the reports, no damage has occurred nor any tsunami, but residents are advised to make necessary preparations for the evacuation if needed.
This is not the first time the Tokara Islands have experienced earthquakes, but the frequency of the earthquakes is unusual, according to the local media reports.
Japan is one of the most seismically active nations on Earth, owing to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet. It experiences about 1,500 earthquakes each year.
About 700 people live on seven of the 12 Tokara islands. There are no hospitals on some of these far-flung islands—the nearest is at least six hours by ferry to the prefectural capital, Kagoshima.
According to media reports, guest houses in the Tokara Islands have stopped accepting guests. Toshima Village said on its website, noting that they might be used as shelters for locals.
Japan has been hit by several earthquakes, but the tsunami in 2011 on the north coast killed more than 18,000 people.
However, the authorities fear that there can be a much bigger mega-earthquake disaster than the tsunami of 2011, which would result in much more loss of life, approximately 300,000 people.
The government earlier this week called for some new measures, such as constructing embankments and evacuation buildings, to strengthen public readiness in case of such a disaster—but it warned that much more needs to be done.
