NEW DELHI, Apr 6: In a horrific incident, a 55-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and paraded semi-naked in Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district in Punjab.

The attackers were the in-laws of her son because he had married the girl against the wishes of her parents, the police said.

A purported video of the victim being paraded surfaced on the social media on Friday. Police said the incident occurred on March 31, a few days after the victim’s son eloped with a woman and married her against her family’s wishes.

As per the complaint filed by the victim, the woman’s son’s in-laws allegedly assaulted her and tore off her clothes at a time when she was alone at her home. The victim further alleged that they paraded her in the village in a semi-naked condition.

Five people have been booked in the case and three of them have been identified as Kulwinder Kaur Mani, Sharanjit Singh Shanni and Gurcharan Singh, police said. BJP’s RP Singh commented on the horrific incident and said, “Punjab is no different from what’s happening in Bengal.” He further said the incident in Tarn Taran has ashamed all.

On the basis of the complaint, an FIR was registered on April 3 under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354D (stalking), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 149 (unlawful assembly).

Four persons have been arrested in this connection so far.
