New Delhi: Pakistan had christened the recent Bay of Bengal cyclone as Gulab (Rose). After leaving behind heavy rains in some states, but little damage, this cyclone is now transforming as Shaheen in the Arabian Sea, threatening coastal areas in western India and Pakistan.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the remnants of Cyclone Gulab will transform into Shaheen and re-emerge in the Arabian Sea along the adjoining Gujarat coastline by Thursday (September 30).

The cyclonic conditions will intensify over the North-Eastern Arabian Sea within the next 24 hours, it said on Wednesday.

The IMD has predicted high chances of a depression formation over the Arabian Sea that might lead to heavy and very heavy rainfall within the next 4 to 5 days in Gujarat.

Manorma Mohanty, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Ahmedabad, said, “We are expecting very heavy rainfall over Navsari, Valsad, and neighboring districts in South Gujarat. Similar conditions may emerge in Saurashtra.”

The phenomenon of a cyclone’s re-emergence is not uncommon. Due to the delay in the withdrawal of monsoon this year, there is sufficient moisture content in the atmosphere, which plays a key role in re-energizing the cyclone.

Therefore, when the remnants of Gulab come in close contact with the warm low-pressure winds of the Arabian Sea, the moisture-laden winds will re-energize and intensify the cyclone through cold winds that might re-emerge as a full-fledged cyclone, reports said.
