UNSC to discuss the current situation of Afghanistan Today
New Delhi: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will meet on Friday to discuss the current situation of Afghanistan under the presidency of India. The UNSC will discuss the steps that must be taken to assist the Central Asian country’s democratic system amid threats from the resurgent Taliban.
A few hours back, Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Mohammed Haneef Atmar interacted with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to “convening an emergency UN Security Council Session” on Afghanistan.
Representative to UN and Security Council President for August, Ambassador TS Tirumurti on Wednesday informed on Twitter that “UN Security Council will meet on Friday, 6th August, under Indian Presidency to discuss and take stock of the situation in Afghanistan.”
The Afghan FM said that “the United Nations and the global community should play a bigger role to check the tragedy that is unfolding in Afghanistan. Appreciate the lead role of as current UNSC President.”
The open discussion on Afghanistan comes within just the first week of India taking over the Presidency of the Council.
The violence of the Taliban noticeably increased in Afghanistan after the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops commenced their pull-out from the country.
Tirumurti added that the Afghanistan situation is of “deep concern” to all Security Council members and “we have seen that in recent days, the violence is only increasing. India wants to see an independent, peaceful, democratic and stable Afghanistan. India has supported every opportunity that can bring peace, security, and stability in Afghanistan.”
