Tremblor: Earthquake of Magnitude 4 Jolts Imphal, Manipur
New Delhi: The capital city of Manipur, Imphal, experienced a mild earthquake of magnitude intensity 4 on the Richter Scale during the early hours of Thursday, January 13, 2022. People were asleep when the earthquake struck and immediately rushed out of their homes.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) shared a seismograph on Twitter that highlighted the affected areas.
“An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred on January 13, 2021, at 2:17 am IST at a latitude of 25.19, longitude 93.88 with a depth of 35 km and located 41km North of Imphal, Manipur, India,” the NCS tweeted on Thursday.
There are no reports of casualties or damages so far.
Geologists believe that the Kopili Fault Zone is the primary reason for the frequent tremblors in the seismically active region.
The Kopili Fault Zone is a 300km long and 50 km wide lineament that lies closer to the Himalayan Frontal Thrust. It runs from the western border of Manipur and connects Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam, thereby creating a tri-junction.
The fault creates a transpressional fracture that leads to frequent lower crustal dextral strike-slip earthquakes in the Seismic Hazard Zone V.
