Tokyo Paralympics: India wins 2 silvers and a bronze too on Monday
New Delhi: Indian athlete Devendra Jhajharia bagged a silver medal and Sundar Singh Gurjar won a bronze in the F46 category of the Men’s Javelin throw event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 on Monday.
Besides, 24-year-old athlete Yogesh Kathuniya also bagged a silver medal in the F56 category of Men’s discus throw, with the best throw of 44.38m at the National Stadium, Tokyo.
Earlier, Avani Lekhara became the first Indian shooter in history to have won gold in the Paralympics.
Jhajharia began the finals with 2 average throws that went roughly over the 60m mark. However, his 3rd throw struck at the 64.35m mark, followed by 2 consecutive fouls, and the final throw registered at 61.23m.
Though Gurjar started slowly at the event, his 5th attempt that registered a throw over the 64m mark qualified him for medal contention.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the winners for their stellar performance in the Paralympics.
Jhajharia had previously won gold at the 2004 and 2016 Games, respectively. The 3rd Indian Javelin thrower, Ajeet Singh, finished 8th in the finals.
The F46 category comprises athletes with arm deficiency, impaired muscle power, or impaired passive range of arm movements and requires athletes to compete in a standing position.
