New Delhi:  Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated sharply in recent hours as the naval blockade of Iran intensified, with fresh incidents reported across key maritime routes.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it has seized two container ships for “disrupting order and safety” within a declared exclusion zone. Maritime monitoring agencies also report that a third vessel was fired upon near the coast of Oman, sustaining heavy damage to its bridge, though no casualties were confirmed.

In Washington, D.C., the White House signalled it would maintain its current naval posture despite the expiry of a two-week ceasefire framework. President Donald Trump said pressure on Iran would continue until a broader agreement is reached, while also indicating that “positive mediation efforts with Tehran” could lead to talks within the next 72 hours.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, responding on social media, said “breach of commitments, blockade and threats are main obstacles to genuine negotiations,” reiterating Tehran “has welcomed dialogue and agreement and continues to do so.”

Parallel diplomatic efforts are also gaining momentum, with representatives from Lebanon and Israel preparing for a second round of U.S.-led talks in Washington. Beirut is likely to push for a one-month extension of the ceasefire to avoid further escalation.

On the ground, Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon continue, while Hezbollah continues to carry out drone attacks targeting Israeli positions.

A new government assessment released on Wednesday estimates that more than 50,000 homes in Lebanon have been damaged or destroyed in the latest phase of the conflict.
