In a video, Radhakrishnan said, “It was 29th May 2014, PM Modi gave me 15 minutes of his time and that was the third day of him becoming the PM of this nation.” He mentioned that space sector reforms brought in the year 2020 were a result of PM Modi’s focus on the contribution of the space sector in the country’s economic growth. “The reforms brought a system where the private players could become co-passengers in the space activity. We are seeing results of that today. At least 55 start-ups are in various phases of space activity and some of them are majors today,” remarked the former ISRO Chief.
Radhakrishnan also recollected another incident during the launch of PSLV when he travelled along with PM Modi for a few hours. It was during that time the idea of a space applications workshop and extending it to all the government departments came up. He said, “We got into the details on how the workshop should be organized. PM Modi got all the Secretaries of the Government of India to come and tell them where they can use space. Space technology was being used by about 15 departments in the Government of India. He wanted it to be used by everyone, all the 60 departments.”
