Shaheed Divas 2023: PM pays tribute to martyrs
New Delhi, March 2023: The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, paid homage to the Indian freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru on the occasion of the Shaheed Divas today.
He wrote on his Twitter handle that “India will always remember the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru. These are greats who made an unparalleled contribution to our freedom struggle.”
Every year, March 23 is observed as Shaheed Divas to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of India under British rule. The day has been chosen as Shaheed Divas as a mark of the death anniversary of three freedom fighters, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Sivaram Rajguru, who were captured while trying to bomb the central legislative assembly on April 8, 1929, as an attempt to seek revenge for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. And on March 23, 1931, the three of them were sentenced to death, at the ages of 23, 24, and 22, respectively.
The vice president of India and chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankar, also expressed his gratitude towards the martyrs and wrote on his Twitter handle, “They chose the path of martyrdom so that every Indian can live a life of freedom and dignity.”
The day has been celebrated for many years, and on this day the prime minister, the president, and the vice president of India also visit the respective memorials of the freedom fighters in Delhi, and this has become the tradition to observe the day.
