Russia interested in nuclear arms talks with the US
New Delhi: Moscow is interested in nuclear arms talks with Washington but negotiations are unlikely to take place in the current situation, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.
“We are interested in such talks as we believe that it’s necessary to continue talks and discuss this issue given the tectonic shifts in the field of European and even global security. Such talks are necessary, the whole world needs them,” Peskov said in response to a media request to comment on US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan’s remark that US-Russia nuclear arms talks were unlikely to resume in the current situation.
“Perhaps, we should agree with the ambassador that it looks unlikely at the moment but sooner or later we will need to return to this issue,” the Kremlin spokesman added.
The US envoy said in an interview with media earlier that he hadn’t been instructed by Washington to prepare for such negotiations. At the same time, Sullivan emphasized that it was “one of the most significant issues between the US and Russia”.
The US only has a limited ability to destroy an incoming nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile, a study released by the American Physical Society concluded.
