Olympic Games: Will ask Russia for ceasefire in Ukraine, says President Macron
New Delhi, Mar 18: French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said France will urge Russia to declare a ceasefire in Ukraine during the Olympic Games to be held in Paris in July-August this year.
Amid calls to boycott the Russian athletes, he told Ukrainian television that while urging Russia to a ceasefire in Ukraine, France will adhere to the decisions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Ukraine has criticized the Russian participation in the Games. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and the ongoing war has resulted in a lot of deaths and destruction.
The IOC has allowed Russian athletes to participate in the Olympics as long as they don’t support the war in Ukraine. The Summer Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11 this year.
