New Delhi, July 1: Every year, countless students dream of becoming doctors, inspired by the opportunity to save lives and serve humanity. Behind every white coat lies years of dedication, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to patient care. On National Doctors’ Day, India pays tribute to these healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to protect and improve the nation’s health.

Observed annually on July 1, National Doctors’ Day honours the contributions of doctors and commemorates the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, one of India’s most respected physicians and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. The day celebrates his enduring legacy and the dedication of doctors who continue to serve society with compassion and commitment.

This year’s National Doctors’ Day theme, “Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?”, highlights the importance of supporting the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of doctors who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

On the occasion of National Doctors’ Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to doctors across the country, acknowledging their hard work, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public service. In a post on X, he described the doctors as backbone of India’s healthcare system and said their tireless efforts were earning the trust of millions of people.

The Prime Minister highlighted the significant progress made in strengthening India’s healthcare ecosystem over the last decades, nearly doubling the numbers of medical colleges, and expanding the undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats is creating greater opportunities for aspiring doctors and helping build a stronger healthcare workforce and improving access to quality medical care.

The PM Modi also said doctors would play a key role in preventive healthcare, medical research, and innovation as India moves towards Viksit Bharat. PM Modi also acknowledged the selfless service of Indian doctors working in Venezuela under Operation Amistad, praising their commitment during challenging times.

Doctors perform many important roles that extend well beyond simply diagnosing and treating illness. Their work involves a combination of medical knowledge, communication, and compassion to support patients fully. From treating illnesses and performing life-saving procedures to comforting patients and their families, they stand beside people during some of life’s most challenging moments. While modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and digital health are transforming healthcare, they can never replace the expertise, empathy, knowledge and ethical judgment of a doctor.

National Doctors’ Day serves as a reminder to recognise the invaluable contribution of doctors to society. Beyond diagnosing and treating diseases, they provide reassurance, inspire hope, and stand by patients during their most difficult moments. Their dedication and compassion continue to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.
