NEW DELHI, June 6L The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he will attend the G7 meeting scheduled to be held in Canada later this month.

In a post on X, Mr Modi said he is glad to have received a call from the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and that he was looking forward to meeting him. “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,” he said.

India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests, the PM added. “As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests,” he said in the post.

Mr Modi also said he congratulated Mr Carney on his win in the Canadian elections held recently. Ahead of the G7 where Mr Modi is expected to meet U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is expected to visit Delhi June 7-8. Both sides are expected to sign the FTA agreement finalised last month.

The meeting between Mr Modi and Mr Carney is important as it comes in the backdrop of the India-Canada relations hitting rock bottom following the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in 2023 of a potential Indian link to the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. G7 constitutes leaders of the Group of Seven, the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, Japan, the U.K. and Italy.
