Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula; No Tsunami Threat Issued

Moscow [Russia]: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula region on Friday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) and international seismic monitoring agencies. No tsunami threat was reported following the tremor.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said no tsunami warning, advisory or watch was in effect following the earthquake.

According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at 9:05 a.m. IST at a depth of 152 km, with its epicentre located at latitude 52.068 degrees North and longitude 157.164 degrees East.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) initially reported a magnitude of 7.0, locating the epicentre approximately 123 km southwest of Vilyuchinsk in Russia.

In a post on X, the EMSC confirmed that the earthquake had been detected through seismic data.

However, its detailed assessment recorded the magnitude at 6.9, with a depth of 130 km and coordinates of 52.059 degrees North and 157.234 degrees East.

The agency placed the epicentre approximately 146 km south-southwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city with a population of around 187,000, and 80 km north-northeast of Ozernovskiy, which has approximately 2,600 residents.

Meanwhile, NOAA recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7.0 and a depth of approximately 148 km. It located the epicentre about 415 miles southwest of Bering Island in the Komandorski Islands region.

The agency reiterated that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat and that no warning, advisory or watch had been issued.

The magnitude and depth estimates varied slightly among seismic monitoring agencies, with the NCS and NOAA reporting a magnitude of 7.0, while the EMSC’s detailed data recorded a magnitude of 6.9.

Further details regarding possible damage, casualties or other impacts of the earthquake are awaited.
