New Delhi: India’s first international ophthalmology research conference will be held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on May 9 and 10, the defence ministry said on Friday. The event will be inaugurated by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth.

The two-day event, titled AIOS-Armed Forces Ophthalmology Update (AIOS-AFOU 2026), is being organised by the Department of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in collaboration with the All India Ophthalmological Society.

The conference will be attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, the three Service Chiefs and the Defence Secretary, highlighting its tri-service character and national importance.

Nearly 200 ophthalmologists, including military eye specialists, are expected to participate in the conference, which will focus on the latest developments across major ophthalmology subspecialties.

More than 100 faculty members from leading institutes such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Sankara Nethralaya and Aravind Eye Care System will take part in the event.

International experts including Harminder Singh Dua from the University of Nottingham, UK, and Colin Siang Hui Tan from Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, will also attend the conference.

According to the ministry, the event aims to provide a platform for young serving ophthalmologists to showcase their skills, learn from experts and strengthen civil-military cooperation in ophthalmology.
