India Criticises UN Report for Describing Dawood Ibrahim-led D-Company as ‘India-Based’ Group

New Delhi: India has criticised a UN report for describing Dawood Ibrahim-led D-Company as an “India-based” criminal group and stressed the need for high standards of impartiality and accuracy in UN reports. India’s First Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the UN, Raghoo Puri, raised the issue during a meeting of the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee. He was responding to a report by UN Special Rapporteur Ben Saul on human rights and counter-terrorism. Mr Puri said such inaccuracies can mislead member states and undermine the credibility of the United Nations.

The report described D-Company as an India-based criminal group led by Dawood Ibrahim, who was listed by the UN Security Council in 2003 for his association with Al-Qaeda. India rejected this description, stating that Dawood Ibrahim and his criminal network had been wanted in connection with terror attacks in India since 1993. India also pointed to the UN Security Council’s 1267 sanctions listing, which records details of the case in its accompanying summary.
