New Delhi: The Tata Group, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and OpenAI have agreed to form a multi-year partnership to develop artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in India, the media reported on Thursday.

The Tata Group is in the process of adopting AI across the stack while also looking to produce chips for multiple industries with the first set expected to cater to the automotive sector, its Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said.

Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, he noted that the Tata Group is building AI capability based on the diverse Indian data.

TCS will develop an AI infrastructure with 100MW capacity, with an option to scale it up to 1 GW to power next-generation AI workloads. The company will leverage OpenAI’s Codex to boost software engineering outcomes.

In 2025, TCS established HyperVault to deliver gigawatt-scale, secure, reliable, large-scale AI-ready infrastructure for hyperscalers and AI-driven organisations.

“All Tata Group employees will have access to Enterprise ChatGPT, while the two companies will provide AI training and resources to Indian youth, enabling them to apply AI responsibly and efficiently at scale. They will develop technology toolkits for NGOs and launch initiatives focused on reaching at least one million Indian youth.”

“Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with the Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it,” said Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI.

“This deep collaboration between OpenAI and the Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era,” said Chandrasekaran.
