Govt releases ‘Women and Men in India 2025’ report’, highlights progress in education, jobs and health
New Delhi: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Wednesday released the 27th edition of its publication, Women and Men in India 2025: Selected Indicators and Data, offering a comprehensive snapshot of gender-related trends across population, education, health, employment and decision-making in India.
The publication was unveiled at the National Deliberative Summit on “Data for Development” held in Bhubaneswar and brings together gender-disaggregated data from various ministries, departments, and institutions.
According to the report, the sex ratio at birth improved nationally from 904 in 2017–19 to 917 in 2021–23, indicating progress in female survival rates. Infant mortality has also steadily declined for both boys and girls between 2008 and 2023.
In education, the report highlights that gender parity has been achieved across all levels of schooling, from primary to higher secondary. It also notes improvements in higher education enrolment, with the Gross Enrolment Ratio rising from 28.5 to 30.2 for females and from 28.3 to 28.9 for males between 2021–22 and 2022–23.
Labour force participation has increased for both genders aged 15 and above, with rural women showing the most significant gains. Female participation in rural areas rose from 37.5 per cent to 45.9 per cent between 2022 and 2025.
The publication further points to growing representation of women in managerial positions, recording a 102.54per cent increase between 2017 and 2025, compared to a 73.80 per cent rise among men.
MoSPI stated that the publication includes metadata for 50 key indicators, helping clarify definitions and methodologies underlying the data, and aims to assist policymakers and researchers in designing gender-responsive policies.
It also presents data across rural and urban segments, as well as state-wise distributions, offering deeper insights into evolving gender dynamics and development patterns across the country.
The publication is available on the official website of MoSPI and can also be accessed through the QR code below.
