New Delhi: India launched Sansad TV on Wednesday, the International Day of Democracy (September 15), in which the erstwhile Lok Sabha TV and Rajya Sabha TV have been merged.

Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly launched Sansad TV from the Main Committee Room, Parliament House Annexe, on Wednesday.

September 15 is globally observed as the International Day of Democracy since the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2007.

“It provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of the international community can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality,” the UN had said.

The erstwhile Lok Sabha TV (LSTV) was a round-the-clock parliamentary channel founded in July 2006 by then-Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to acquaint citizens with the actions of their elected representatives in Parliament.

The Rajya Sabha TV (RSTV) transmitted live coverage of the Upper House proceedings and provided knowledge-based programs.
