Celebrating “World Sparrow Day” on March 20 with the theme “I Love Sparrow”
New Delhi, March 20: Every year on March 20, the world sparrow day is observed to raise awareness about conservation and protection of sparrows that are on the verge of extinction.
The main goal of celebrating World Sparrow Day is to educate people about the value of this little species and their role in the eco-system, who don’t even know how to make their own nest.
The celebration of World Sparrow Day was introduced in the year 2010, when it was celebrated on March 10; after that, it was continuously celebrated every year on the date of March 20. When the founder of the Natural Forever Society, Mohammed Dilawar, raised his voice and expressed concern for this extinct species, as well as his efforts for the protection and conservation of the sparrow, Time magazine named him a “conservation hero.” It is said that the idea of World Sparrow Day came from a casual conversation over tea at the national forever society office.”
The sparrow is basically a common house bird. We all recognize it as a small bird whose voice we hear early in the morning, but nowadays we hardly locate one or two. It plays the role of an indicator of regional environmental health. It plays a big role in our ecosystem, and the decreasing numbers of this bird are a cause for concern.
As an initiative to make a change in this, the day is celebrated with different themes, and this year too, on March 20, 2023, the day is celebrated with the theme “I love sparrows” to raise awareness and inspire individuals and organizations all over the world to take action to protect them directly or indirectly.
