Ahmedabad: A few skincare products contain antioxidants, but one may not know what they are or how they function. Antioxidants are a supergroup of substances that may do a lot of good for skin. They are damage fighters that aid in the slowing of skin ageing, and they merit a spot in your skincare routine.

“Antioxidants protect the skin by decreasing free radical generation, which may harm the skin,” Dr. Rhonda Klein, a board-certified dermatologist in Connecticut, said.

“They can help minimise lentigines (sunspots), counteract obvious symptoms of age, and calm skin inflammations when used regularly. Several antioxidants hydrate the skin and help it retain moisture, which can help revive dull-looking skin,” she added.

Studies have shown that using antioxidants in your skincare routine can aid in the battle against free radical damage and recovery from oxidative stress.

Effects of Antioxidants on Skin:

  1. Antioxidants aid in the reduction of indications of ageing.

Fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, acne outbreaks, and a blotchy skin tone are all signs of oxidative stress, which breaks down collagen, hampers the skin’s natural healing process, and causes inflammation. Antioxidants can help prevent and repair these obvious indications by scavenging free radicals, giving skin a more youthful look.

  1. Antioxidants aid in the prevention of solar damage.

By definition, all antioxidants have anti-inflammatory qualities. It reduces the skin’s inflammatory reaction to the sun’s damaging rays, minimising sunburn and enhancing sun damage and photoaging prevention.

  1. Antioxidants aid in the skin’s self-repair

The skin’s regeneration process is slowed by inflammation. Antioxidants help the skin rebuild itself and mend apparent damage by lowering inflammation. Some antioxidants, such as vitamin C, can help increase collagen formation, which is important for young skin.

  1. Antioxidants aid in the brightening of skin tone.

Changes in our skin’s melanin synthesis can be triggered by free radicals and regular sun exposure, resulting in dark patches and uneven skin tone. Antioxidants can help prevent aberrant skin pigmentation by minimising photodamage. Some antioxidants (like vitamin C) also block tyrosinase, an enzyme that promotes the synthesis of melanin.

Vitamins C and E, as well as selenium, have been shown to protect the skin against UV damage and skin cancer in studies. They may even be able to reverse some of the discolouration and wrinkles that come with age.

Consumption has a big impact on skin’s health. To protect the skin, one must make sure that they obtain important nutrients through rich foods for maintaining healthy, robust, and beautiful skin.
