Assembly polls 2026: BJP ahead in early trends in Assam and West Bengal

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took an early lead in the counting trends for the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal on Monday, according to data released by the Election Commission of India.

In Assam, the BJP was leading in 74 constituencies as of 10:30 a.m., maintaining a clear edge over the Indian National Congress (INC) and other regional parties. The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), an ally of the BJP, was leading in 9 seats, followed by another ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), with 7 seats.

The INC was ahead in 24 seats. The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), an ally of the Congress, was leading in 1 seat, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist)Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) were leading in 1 seat each.

Polling in the state was held for 126 constituencies, with the majority mark at 64.

In West Bengal, the BJP was leading in 68 constituencies as of 10:30 a.m., while the incumbent All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) was ahead in 39 seats.

Counting is under way in 293 of the 294 constituencies in West Bengal after the Election Commission ordered a re-poll in the Falta seat in South 24 Parganas district on May 21. The result for that constituency will be declared on May 24.
