Assam Floods: Locals seek refuge on embankments, highways
New Delhi: Several residents from the Nagaon district of Assam are forced to seek refuge on embankments and highways as major regions of the district continue to remain inundated.
Most residents were found sleeping in tents beside highways as their homes are still under water. According to reports, ten people died within 24 hours, thereby increasing the total number of deaths to 117.
Out of the 117 deaths, 100 people succumbed to floods and 17 were killed by landslides.
The state government has deployed two drones in Silchar and Cachar districts to carry out flood inundation mapping and to deliver relief items to inaccessible locations.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel as well as SDRF, Fire and Emergency personnel, the Police Force, and AAPDA MITRA Volunteers are assisting district administrations with rescue operations and relief deliveries.
“717 relief camps and 409 relief distribution centres have been opened in all affected areas. A total of 2,65,788 inmates are staying in these relief camps. The situation emerging due to incessant rains is under close watch,” an official was quoted as saying.
The floods affected over 1.42 lakh people across 155 villages that come under the town of Raha in the Nagaon district, whereas more than 5.03 lakh people are impacted across the Nagaon district.
The situation continues to remain grave as 45.34 lakh people in total remain adversely affected in the Northeastern state. Excessive flooding harmed 33,03,316 individuals from 3,510 villages in 28 districts as well as 91658.49 hectares of crop lands so far.
