New Delhi: Hitendra Nath Goswami of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a decisive victory in the Jorhat Assembly constituency, defeating Gaurav Gogoi of the Indian National Congress (INC) by a margin of 23,182 votes, according to official data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

As per the final round of counting, Goswami polled 69,439 votes, while Gogoi secured 46,257 votes, reflecting a strong performance by the BJP in the constituency and reinforcing its growing support in the state.

Other candidates lagged far behind. Pranab Priyankush Dutta of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) received 701 votes, while Hemanta Kumar Pegu of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) secured 581 votes. NOTA (None of the Above) accounted for 1,319 votes.

Polling for the Assembly elections was held on April 9, recording a high voter turnout of 85.96 per cent from an electorate of over 2.5 crore.

A total of 722 candidates, including 59 women, contested the elections. The Congress fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90.

Among other parties, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) contested 30 seats. NDA allies included the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) with 26 candidates and the Bodo Peoples’ Front with 11.

Within the opposition bloc, Raijor Dal fielded 13 candidates, Assam Jatiya Parishad contested 10, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) fielded three candidates, while the All Party Hill Leaders Conference contested two seats.

Other parties in the fray included the All India Trinamool Congress (22 seats), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (16 seats), and the United People’s Party Liberal and Aam Aadmi Party with 18 seats each. Additionally, 258 Independent candidates contested the elections.
