US Open: Novak Djokovic beats Jenson Brooksby by 3-1
New Delhi: Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic defeated America’s Jenson Brooksby by 3-1 in the fourth round match during the US Open 2020 competitions at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Tuesday.
Brooksby’s elimination marks the first time in history that a player from the host country failed to qualify for the quarterfinals in any Grand Slam event since 1880.
Playing for the first time in the stadium, an unfazed Brooksby swept clear of 1-6 as Djokovic ran around the court, committing 11 errors while trying to keep up with his opponent in the first set.
However, the World No.1 staged a strong comeback in the second set as he ousted an exhausted Brooksby by 6-3. The sixth-seeded immediately switched his strategy to backhand serves for third and fourth sets, but in vain.
Djokovic’s victory by 6-2 in the last two games led him into the US Open quarterfinals.
The intense match witnessed 24 points, 9 deuces, and 6 breakpoints within 20 minutes.
Djokovic will face World No.6 Italian player Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals of Men’s Singles Open on Wednesday.
