US Open 2021: Medvedey beats Djokovic, wins Grand Slam
New Delhi: Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev beat Serbian Novak Djokovic by 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to win his maiden Grand Slam at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York, on Monday morning (IST).
The historic match saw Medvedev dominate the opening set by aggressively asserting serves while Djokovic committed two faults and landed 4-6. The second set had Medvedev committing double faults, but Djokovic’s unforced errors pushed the latter to another loss by 4-6.
Meanwhile, though an undeterred Djokovic tried a comeback in the final set, his opponent outplayed him.
Medvedev stayed in the lead throughout, with aces and powerful serves.
The second seed defeated some of the major players to win the Grand Slam tournament this season and denied Djokovic the opportunity to win a 21st Grand Slam title that would have been the first-ever Calendar win since 1969.
However, the World No.1 will advance into the next season with a 20th Grand Slam tie with Roger Federer and Rafal Nadal.
