TikTok surpasses Instagram to become the most downloaded app of 2022: Report
Mumbai: Popular social media application TikTok beat Instagram and became the most downloaded app in the first three months of 2022.
The short-video app allows clips for up to 10 minutes where users can browse the videos on the For You page. The algorithm displays videos based on a viewer’s likes and preferences.
In a report published by Sensor Tower’s Q1 2022: Store Intelligence Data Digest, “TikTok surpassed 3.5 billion all-time downloads, thereby becoming just the fifth app (and the only one not owned by Meta) to cross this threshold.
“No app has had more downloads than TikTok since the inception of 2018,” the report said.
The app has been downloaded over 175 million times, beating apps like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram. Though Instagram had narrowly beaten TikTok in terms of downloads during Q4 2021, TikTok surpassed the popular image and video sharing platform.
TikTok’s instantaneous popularity led to other social media platforms replicating the features. Instagram incorporated a Reels feature, and YouTube implemented YouTube Shorts to capitalize on the growing preference for the short-video content.
On the other hand, TikTok introduced a typical feature of Instagram wherein users can make and view Stories on the popular video platform. “TikTok had its best quarter to date with over 30 million downloads,” the report added.
