Tennis: Roger Federer arrives in London for his last ATP tournament as a player
New Delhi: Twenty-time grand slam champion, Roger Federer, arrived in London for the Laver Cup. The cup will be his last tournament as a professional tennis player.
The Swiss player announced retirement from competitive tennis saying that the upcoming Laver Cup in September 2022 would be his last Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event as a player.
Federer took to Twitter to announce the retirement through a letter. He won 103 ATP singles title and 1251overall matches throughout his illustrious career.
He has won 20 Grand Slam titles, including 8 Wimbledon Men’s single titles.
“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour. This is a bittersweet decision because I will miss everything the tour has given me. But at the same time, there is so much to celebrate. I consider myself one of the most fortunate people on earth,” Roger wrote in his retirement letter.
The tennis legend is expected to begin his last match on September 22, 2022, with a practice session with Team Europe. Federer will face other tennis legends including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. He will also play alongside young talent including Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Laver Cup will be held from September 23 to September 25, 2022.
