‘Positive, Productive’ Talks Signal Imminent India–U.S. Trade Deal
New Delhi: Trade talks between India and the United States have entered a decisive phase, with officials indicating that only a few issues remain before a deal can be finalised.
A senior U.S. official said negotiations in Washington, D.C. are moving forward steadily as delegations from both countries meet for another round of discussions.
“The Trump administration and India continue to have positive and productive discussions towards a finalised trade deal,” the official told ANI when asked about the status of the talks.
The arrival of the Indian delegation in Washington for in-person negotiations signals renewed momentum after a period of intermittent engagement.
Another official familiar with the ongoing negotiations, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the deal is now at an advanced stage, with most of the major issues already settled.
“Most of it is almost done,” the official told ANI. “There aren’t many loose ends left.”
The Indian delegation is currently in Washington for the latest round of talks. The talks are taking place with officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), with Brendan Lynch leading the American side as lead negotiator and Darpan Jain heading the Indian delegation.
Officials explained that the attendance of high-level representatives from both nations shows the increasing strength of support for the potential deal. Although no details have been officially released, the progress that has been reached in the talks means that an announcement may be imminent.
Both nations have been engaged in lengthy negotiations with the aim of lowering taxes and increasing economic activity between the nations. The eventual signing of a treaty will be a significant development in the relationship between the world’s largest economy and a rapidly developing economy.
These recent developments have been preceded by announcements made by both nations on February 7 that an interim agreement was signed based on reciprocity and mutual benefits for trade.
According to ANI, the framework highlighted their commitment to move ahead with negotiations aimed at signing a broader agreement known as the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
The talks leading up to the BTA were initiated by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025. The objective was improving market access and strengthening economic cooperation between the two nations.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also confirmed that an Indian trade delegation would be visiting the United States this week for discussions related to the BTA.
“The Indian trade delegation will be arriving in Washington this week. A great step to finalise our bilateral trade deal. A win-win for both nations!” he wrote in a post on X.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also said the first tranche of the proposed bilateral trade agreement with the United States is “almost finalised,” with discussions focused on securing preferential market access for India in the US market relative to its competitors.
“We have almost finalised our free trade agreement, the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement with them. We are trying to close the Ts and dots on that and work out what would be the mechanism by which India can get a preferential access, market access in the US market compared to our competitors,” Goyal told reporters on the sidelines of the India-Korea Business Forum in New Delhi.
