New Delhi: India’s petrol and diesel consumption rebounded in April as it recorded a 4 per percent increase in demand after months of low or negative growth, the media reported on Monday.
The demand grew primarily because of increasing consumption in summer.
Diesel, India’s most consumed petroleum fuel, recorded a growth of 2 per percent in the last fiscal year (2024-25) and had no growth in FY24. In April 2025, diesel consumption rose to 8.23 million tonnes, up nearly 4 per cent over demand in the year-ago period, according to the latest data available with the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) in the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The 4 per percent rise in April 2025 is the highest recorded volume for this month and the second-highest ever volume in any month. While there has also been a shift in passenger vehicles to petrol, CNG, and electricity, diesel still makes up 38 per cent of all petroleum products consumed in the country.
Petrol consumption also recorded growth of 4.6 per percent to a million tonnes. Last year, petroleum growth soared by 19 per cent due to electioneering. LPG continued to be in the fast lane with 6.7 per cent growth to 2.621 million tonnes, driven by the government’s Ujjawala Yojana for cooking gas connections. Since 2019, volumes equal to almost 5 months have been added in domestic cooking gas consumption.
Jet fuel clocked a double-digit growth last year due to electioneering, while the demand for aviation turbine fuel (ATF) grew by 11.28 per percent in April 2024, according to PPAC.
