On Kargil Vijay Diwas, India gratefully remembers martyrs
New Delhi: The Indian Army organized a special program to recall inspirational stories of Operation Vijay at Lomochen, Ladakh, on Sunday morning, paying rich tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives in the Kargil Conflict in 1999.
Top officers and soldiers, including gallantry awardees, participated in the event to commemorate the glorious chapter in the annals of India to mark the 22nd Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed on Monday, an annual victory celebration.
Colonel Imron Mousavi, PRO, said, “559 lamps were lit symbolically at the Kargil War Memorial in the memory of the martyred soldiers. The valor of the soldiers of Tololing, Tiger Hill, Point 4875, and the Indian Army, was described to the audience before taking them down the memory lane.”
“A military tune was played at the closing ceremony, followed by the trailer release of a new film Shershah and the song Ma Teri Kasam. The Northern Command conceptualized the song,” he added.
Recalling the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared an excerpt from last year’s Mann Ki Baat on Twitter with the caption, “We remember their sacrifices. We remember their valor. Today on Kargil Vijay Diwas, we pay homage to all those who lost their lives in Kargil protecting our nation. Their bravery motivates us every single day.”
Martyred during Pakistan’s Operation Ghenghis Khan, Captain Vikram Batra, 24, was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his notable contribution to the War. The new film Shershah, with actor Siddharth Malhotra in the lead role, is based on him.
The 1999 war was fought on one of the world’s roughest terrains, in which India defeated Pakistan. Captain Batra was among nearly 500 Indian martyrs who contributed to Pakistan’s defeat.
