New Delhi: Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek defeated Belarusian player Arnya Sabalenka in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the women’s singles semi finals of the Italian Open 2022 in Rome.
The 20-year old improved her overall head-to-head record with Sabalenka to 3-1. Swiatek broke the opponent twice in the opening set to build a 3-1 lead before closing the set within 30 minutes.
Swiatek showed aggression and applied continuous pressure in the next set. She took an immediate 4-0 lead before winning the match 6-2, 6-2.
Meanwhile, World No. 8 Sabalenka received a medical timeout at 4-1. Swiatek, on the other hand, extended her winning streak to 27 our matches and reached her 4th WTA 1000 final of the season.
The Polish will either face Ons Jabeur or Daria Kasatkina in her 5th WTA 1000 final on Sunday, May 15, 2022.
