New Delhi: American tennis player Taylor Fritz stunned Spanish ace player Rafael Nadal, as he won first Masters title with 6-3, 7-6(5) during the Men’s singles event of the Indian Wells Masters 2022, California, United States, on Monday, March 21, 2022.
Fritz took an early lead after three games in the opening set. He played aces and rallied serves against Nadal despite an ankle injury. He won the first set 6-3 as Nadal tried to gain momentum.
The final set had Nadal trying to keep up with Fritz, whose aggressive forehand smashes prevented Nadal from scoring. Though Nadal managed to lead the match into a tiebreaker, Fritz proved his mettle by defeating the Spaniard 7-6 (5) and winning his maiden Masters title on Monday.
Meanwhile, Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek ousted Greek player Maria Sakkari in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the women’s singles finals of the Indian Wells Masters 2022 in California, United States, on Monday, March 21, 2022.
