Grammys 2022 excludes Lata Mangeshkar from the In-Memorium Segment
New Delhi: The 64th Grammys 2022 excluded late Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar from the In-Memorium segment during the award ceremony at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Monday, April 04, 2022.
It is the second international event that failed to remember the late singer. The Oscars 2022 also left Mangeshkar from the homage section. Singer Bappi Lahiri was also excluded from the segment.
The In-Memorium segment paid tribute to songs by the late Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, performed by Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt, and Rachel Zegler. Legendary drummer of Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins, Hollywood acting greats Sidney Poitier and Betty White, singer-actors Meat Loaf, Vicente Fernandez, jazz composer Chick Corea, and Tom Parker were also honored.
However, the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) 2022 edition featured Mangeshkar in the In-Memorium section and described the musician as “an Indian playback singer who recorded an estimated 25,000 songs for more than 1,000 Hindi films over a career spanning 70 years”.
Fondly remembered as the Nightingale of India, Mangeshkar succumbed to a multiple organ failure at 92 on January 06, 2022. Fans strongly reacted against the exclusion on Twitter and other social networking platforms. They even criticized the Recording Academy for failing to mention the legendary singer.
