Football: Argentine star Angel Di Maria retires from national team
New Delhi, July 16: Football legend Angel Di Maria has officially retired from his country’s national team following Argentina’s 1-0 win over Columbia in the Copa America final on Monday, the media reported.
He had previously revealed his plans to retire from the national team after the 2024 Copa America. “It was my dream to retire from the national team like this. Argentina is my love and my country. Thank you,” he said.
Di Maria,36, debuted in Argentina’s national team during the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, in 2008. Sixteen years in Argentina’s national team, Di Maria made 144 appearances and scored 31 goals.
He played in major football tournaments with Argentina including four World Cups and six Copa Americas, winning one Olympic gold medal, one World Cup, and two Copa Americas.
