Flood in Bihar, Situation worsened in 12 districts of the state

Patna: The Disaster Management Division (DMD) in India on August 12 reported that the floods situation in the eastern part of Bihar has affected over 250,000 people in the last few days.

Seven rivers in the state, including the Ganges, are above the danger mark in 15 locations.

DMD reported that across 125 villages in 5 districts affected a lot and the situation has worsened more after heavy rainfall in flooded areas.

Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, carried out an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas on 11 August 2021 and instructed officials to further step up relief and rescue operations in 12 affected districts.

The Ganges is also flooding areas upstream in the state of Uttar Pradesh, most recently the ancient city of Varanasi regarded as the spiritual capital of India. As of 11 August, the Ganges stood at 72.08 meters and rising at Varanasi. The danger marks here are 71.262 meters and the record-high 73.901 meters set in 1978.

People of low-lying areas have taken shelter in higher places. 21 teams of NDRF and SDRF are carrying out relief and rescue operations.

Medical teams have also been deployed. Standing crops spread over 70 lakh hectares have been damaged. Vehicular traffic has been disrupted in several parts of the state as flood water is flowing on roads. The state is witnessing heavy to moderate rainfall across the state. Met department has issued an alert for heavy rainfall in most parts of the state in the next 48 hours.
